Anyone heard of "phantom smell syndrome"? i've heard of odd smells (like burning rubber) with some brain tumors/bleeds. any other causes?

Yes: Most often this is due to a bit of foreign material or infection in the nasopharynx or nasal sinuses. The death of George Gershwin following a hallucination of burning rubber while performing on the keyboard is justly famous, but it's much more likely that there's something up your nose. Best wishes.
