See answer: Ashwagandha has been shown in many studies to reverse hypothyroidism in mice. It's likely that some Ayurvedic and herbalist practitioners are prescribing it for their patients. *However I could find no studies on it's use in humans. Ashwagandha is not without side effects. There is one report of Ashwagandha induced Thyrotoxicosis that resolved on stopping it. I would favor use of Levothyroxine.
