A member asked:

In cases of hypothyroidism does the body not know it's warm when it's ok weather outside leading to wearing more layers because they feel cold?

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Hypothyroidism: Think of the thyroid as the body's thermostat. A house feels cold when thermostat is set lower, warming up as setting is turner higher. Likewise, in hypothyroidism which is an underactive thyroid, metabolism is turned/slowed down so less energy/heat is generated. Thus you tend to wear more clothes than is appropriate for that environment.
