Not too many: Surgeons are reluctant to operate when the risk of death is very high. They see their role to be that of prolonging life. Nonetheless, many things can happen in surgery and death is a possible outcome. The more complex and lengthy the surgery, the greater the risk. Operating on deeper and vital structures increases risk. And the underlying disease may be critical and deadly.
