Ovulation: Women ovulate on day 14 in a 28 day cycle (28 - 14), on day 12 in a 26 day and on day 16 in a 30 day cycle. Of course, they never know how long the ongoing cycle will be. Sperm can survive for up to 5 days. The first day of the menstrual period is day one. 5 days of menses plus 3 - 4 days when unprotected intercourse occurred plus 5 days of potential sperm survival equals day 13 or 14.
