A member asked:

Smoked for a few years in college. quit 12 years ago. rumbling in chest when laying down and breathing in for about 18 months. x-rays clear. no cough?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Emphysema?: In some people who are genetically predisposed, even a short time of smoking can set off a cascade of physiologic ills within the lungs that will lead to emphysema even if they stop smoking. There's a chance you can be one of these people. You should get tested just to be sure. You would need a pulmonary function test.
