Knee impact injury: As long as the skin is closed, I would ice the area, elevate, and limit movement for a little while. Over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) and/or Advil would be beneficial. If the pain does not subside within a day or so, or if there is any pain with weightbearing, I would see a local emergency department or urgent care and get an x-ray to make sure that he didn't break the knee cap.

Knee cap: Direct blows to the knee cap will usually injure the protective bursa sac , which will swell and produce pain. If your knee cap pain is increased with bending your knee or while trying to do a straight leg raise you should get an X-ray. Otherwise try ICE REST COMPRESSION AND ELEVATION ALONG WITH OVER the counter alleve .
