Difficult question: This is an extremely difficult and complicated answer. I would reference a medical textbook as this requires a discussion of the various proteins that make up the skin.

Will my babys skin peel forever?

No: Most newborns' skin is dry and flakes for approximately 4 weeks. Lotion is not necessary, and in some cases may actually irritate the skin. If your baby's skin continues to be dry after that time, he/she needs to be examined to determine if they have eczema or another skin condition.

Not necessarily: Multiple "cafe-au-lait" spots on your baby's skin may be simply that - benign spots of pigmentation. It is estimated that about 20% of the population has them. Multiple cafe-au-lait spots can also be associated with some rare disorders, including neurofibromatosis. See dr. Greene's blog article for more: http://bit.Ly/fwszi1 and ask your pediatrician.

Skin pigmentation: There are various disorders of skin pigmentation. Is there a particular one you are concerned with. There are numerous treatments, not necessarily a "cure" per se for various skin pigmentation disorders. Laser therapy is often helpful for many skin pigmentation disorders. Please see your local dermatologist and/or plastic surgeon to discuss these options!
