A member asked:

Do nontreponemal syphilis testsbecome unreliable over time? can they pick up a syphilis infection after five years? should i trust a - result atp?

Syphilis testing: If u have a positive syphilis test, this needs further evaluation. There are essentially 2 different kinds of tests -specific ones (antibody tests like FTA-ABS, TPA) and nontreponemal serological tests (RPR, VDRL). You can certainly have 'latent' syphilis years after an exposure that wasn't treated properly. It's also possible the non-treponemal test is reacting against something else. See ID doc.
