A member asked:

I want to know what it means when a drug blocks sodium channels in the brain. is that good or bad for my metabolism? topiramate.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The way it works: Blocking sodium channels in the brain is the MECHANISM OF ACTION in most antiseizure drugs. Changing electrical activity in this way reduces/controls epileptic fits. Since it's CRITICAL to control seizures we feel that possible side effects on overall metabolism by sodium blockade is an acceptable tradeoff of side effects that could act systemically.
