It could be, if you : also have a fever. Get a Quick-strep done; if it's negative, wait for throat culture results before startling antibiotics. If you have a viral flu-like illness, antibiotics will not help. Your sons need to take their full 10-day courses of antibiotics to prevent Rheumatic Fever, a complication of pharyngitis caused by certain strains of Group A Streptococcus.
