Neuropathy: Burning pain is characteristic of nerve pain(neuropathy). The lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf is a sensory nerve that supplies the area you describe. A compression or local trauma to the nerve can cause this pain. Nerve compression in the back can also cause pain in the lateral leg (lumbar radiculopathy).
