Different viruses: Most cold sores are caused by a herpes simplex virus. Most of us have this virus live in the nerve and flare up from time to time. Genital herpes is caused by same family of virus as mouth sores. Herpes is relatively more contagious than HIV virus that causes aids & is transmitted through blood or unprotected sexual contact. Aids is lethal without treatment, while herpes is not lethal.

HSV, HSV, HIV: Cold sores are the common recurrent form of the herpes virus that can affect the oral cavity, genitals, nose, eyes and/or fingertips. The preliminary form is an inflammatory infection that may or may not be symptomatic. The HIV virus is spread by bodily fluid contact; infection (aids) gradually destroys the immune system rendering one unable to fight infections that lead to death.
