Anatomy: An ileoproctostomy is a connection (anastomosis) between the ileum (distal small bowel) and the rectum. It is done after removing the entire colon. An ileostomy is a creation of an opening on the abdominal wall, then bringing the ileum to it and opening it so that the bowel contents empty into a bag. An ileostomy can be done without removing the entire colon and can be reversed when indicated.
