Abscess? Cellulitis?: This sounds like a bacterial skin infection, either abscess or cellulitis. You don't say the size, but if more than 2-3 cm diameter, you should be seen ASAP. Get seen immediately (e.g. hospital ER or urgent care) if redness is spreading rapidly or if you have fever or chills. Good luck!

The most common pathogen in infectious folliculitis is Staphylococcus aureus. The management of folliculitis varies based upon the etiology. Mild S. aureus folliculitis may resolve without medical treatment. Topical mupirocin can be used initially.
