A 17-year-old female asked:

is it likely that i will be prescribed adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) xr for concentration if i ask? i'm in the uk and don't have add or adhd

ADHD meds: I would assume any MD would be rather cautious about prescribing ADHD meds so easily. They can be abused and should not be prescribed to people based solely upon a complaint about concentration difficulties. There are many reasons why concentration would be a problem and they should be checked out before prescribing meds.

If there is clear evidence that you have clear signs and symptoms of attention deficit issues, and you have had a complete medical work-up, then adderall is an effective treatment for these symptoms.

GREAT QUESTION: Adhd & bpd share a seamless boundary & are often comorbid (occur together) with each other. The cbcl (http://vinst.Umdnj.Edu/vaid/testreport.Asp?Code=cbca) is a helpful tool your doctor can use to help differentiate them. Adhd kids are usually happier and are sweethearts. Bpd kids more often have chronic irritability and can be very destructive, purposefully aggressive, mean & hurtful.

No: Adhd is just a group of symptoms. In my opinion, it is not a disease. The diagnosis is based on a checklist of subjective symptoms. Kids can have focus and behavior problems but it does not mean they have adhd. It means they have some underlying medical or educational problem that can be treated without psychiatric drugs.

ADHD: Many physicians are capable of diagnosing and treating adhd. If you have a family doctor, discuss the matter with the doctor or with a pediatrician. Ask for a thorough evaluation by a doctor who works with children with adhd.
