Needs followup study: This is a not uncommon finding among newborn ultrasounds, some think a variant of normal. However, it definitely needs followup ultrasound to confirm resolution. If USG means a followup ultrasound is normal, then it is resolved! Its not really that he had a problem that is cured, its just that it is not uncommon for babies antenatally to have this very mild swelling that resolves by 6 months.

Cured?: Mild dilation of the fetal kidney pelvis is a common finding that usually disappears by 6-8 weeks after birth. I consider it a variation of normal but one that requires the simple followup ultrasound. Persistence of the dilation would suggest some blockage to the outflow of urine.I don't use the term cured for something like this, I just don't worry any more about it.
