See a podiatrist: Cut your nail straight across to prevent ingrown nails. There are non operative treatments a podiatrist can use depending on the severity. (ie. putting a small metal shield beneath the nail and letting it grow out beyond the skin)

Try trimming.: The cause is limited to either the nail, socks, shoes, activity or any combination of the above. Once the nail begins irritating the flesh and inflammation begins there is little that can be done without making an adjustment to the offending nail. A small trim may help in the short run, but an visit to a specialist may be necessary. These things can be fixed and you can resume activity tomorrow.
