Strain/sprain: Knee pain and stiffness after an increase in exercise can be caused by strained muscle around the knee or injury to the ligaments, which are helped by rest, intermittent icing, elevation of the joint on a couple of pillows, and taking over the counter pain medication. If it continues to hurt, it will need to be evaluated by a physician.
