Iliotibial band: could be inflammation of distal iliotibial band, could be knee arthritis or meniscal tear. I would start with NSAID treatment, barring no contraindications (ulcer, kidney disease). I would at least obtain an X ray of the knee and trial of physical therapy. You can seek interventional pain medicine, and seek injections. If symptoms dont resolve, then you should get an MRI. best of luck
