Topically it is safe: Topical lidocaine is used for chronic pain very commonly. As with all medications there are potential side effects; some minor, some more concerning. Most adverse reactions are skin reactions but with large amounts more widespread symptoms occur. There is also the risk of further injury to the area that has been anesthetized. My concern is for the underlying reason you are using this medication.

Real Question...Why?: I guess the real question in my mind would be, Why? I often prescribe lidocaine ointment for painful hemorrhoids. Lidocaine jelly can also be used to reduce sensitivity of the penis in men with premature ejaculation. But, neither of these would necessitate continuous use over a long period of time.
