I am originally from Oakland, California but have lived throughout the Western United States...including Alaska...settling in Utah County, Utah, USA. I graduated from the California State University system and went on to graduate from USC Medical School. My residency was at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California, USA, specializing in Internal Medicine, primary care doctors for adults. Since starting practice in Orem, Utah, USA in 1993, I have refined my practice style to focus on lifestyle related issues such as Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia, and Obesity. There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone along their journey towards better health and a more enjoyable, active life...preferably with no or minimal medication. I believe that the most important person in the determination of good health is YOU! As such, I strive to educate, inspire, and empower you to achieve your healthiest potential.

A 25-year-old female asked:
Purification...: After a large holiday meal (or sequence of meals), I find it best to take my body through a 24-hr, water-only fast. Not only do the stomach, small bowel, and colon cleanse, but also the excess stored carbohydrates are retrieved from the liver (glycogen storage). This can measurably reduce the bloated waist size after a series of indulgences. Skin turgor and oiliness improve too!
A 33-year-old male asked:
Bowel slowdown...: Nicotine is a cholinergic, i.e. it stimulates bowel activity. If you are withdrawing from nicotine, you may experience bowel slowdown that results in bloating. As such, a fiber laxative, such as Metamucil (R), might be helpful in normalizing bowel function until you re-accommodate to not having nicotine in your system. This might take several weeks or more. Congratulations on a healthy decision!!
A 24-year-old female asked:
You bet...: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can certainly cause a general weakness feeling, unsteady, near fainting, etc. In obese individuals, this might be a pre-diabetes symptom. In a slender person, this might infer that they do not have adequate stored carbohydrates to respond to drops in blood sugar. Regardless, hypoglycemia should be evaluated by your physician so that specific counsel can be given.
