Irregular periods and spotting could mean you may have some hormonal imbalance that could be affected by many different factors, including age (if approaching menopause?), nutrition, illness, exercise (or lack of it), body girth, psychological well-being, stress, season, or simple fluctuations of other related hormones (thyroid for example).

Postcoital bleeding: If your period is due, it might be it's just starting a bit early, maybe triggered by uterus motion during sex. However, bleeding after sex can be a sign of cervicitis, sometimes caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea (only if at risk for STD, of course); dysplasia caused by HPV; cervical ectopy (also called ectropion), which can occur on hormonal contraception; and others.
