I m 5 wks pregnant .yesterday during my first visit to dr, she recommended 5mg foilc acid per day. i think it is much higher dose as 400 to 600microgm?

It is high!: But, some women have an increased risk of having a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect and are advised to take a higher dose of 5 milligrams (5mg) of folic acid each day until they are 12 weeks pregnant. Also, a large number of drugs are known to alter folate metabolism and increase the need. If this was not made clear, ask your doctor to explain your elevated risks and verify the dose.
