How are effexor (venlafaxine) tablets and effexor (venlafaxine) xr different?

The release: Regular Effexor (venlafaxine) tablets (immediate release form) need to be taken 2-3 times a day. The xr is an extended release version of Effexor (venlafaxine) and only needs to be taken once a day. They both perform the same way and have the same side effects.
