Symptomatic: The common cold is usually viral and self limited. Treatment is aimed at controlling the symptoms and not directly at the virus.

Symptom relief: Cold Tips: For sore throat – gargle with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz of water). * For congestionsaline nose drops or a neti pot. *For anti-inflammatory effect & mobilizing mucus- homemade chicken noodle soup.**For hydration- lots of water. Rest and fluids: Treatments do not affect the course of illness. Take tylenol (acetaminophen) if you have fever, drink plenty of fluids, get some rest and take precautions to not spread it to others. You may take over the counter medications if it helps with the symptoms.

TLC: Since colds are viral infection, there is no "magic medicine" for a cure. In infants, saline nose drops may be used to loosen nasal mucus before wiping or gentle suction. For severe congestion (swelling inside of the nose), over-the-counter phenylephrine nose drops (0.125%-0.25%) may be used every 4 hours if feeding or sleeping are significantly affected.

Is zinc an effective treatment for the common cold?

Maybe but ...: When you take zinc tablets/syrup for a cold, you may be sick for a shorter period of time and your cold symptoms may not be so severe. Sounds good, right? Only problem - side effects. Some folks hate the taste. Other folks get sick stomachs from it. Don't use the zinc nasal spray, which can cause permanent loss of smell. ::passes you the chicken soup and kleenex::.
