More info needed: "Worried" about herpes usually isn't a good enough reason for a blood test. And the blood tests for HSV aren't perfect. If you have been exposed to someone with known herpes (oral or genital) or have symptoms, testing might be a good idea. Discuss your concerns with your doctor and take it from there. Good luck.

Yes: The best diagnosis is made when an actual lesion is cultured. The cultures can have a high false negative rate. Antibody tests are not as accurate as a viral culture at finding the cause of a specific sore or ulcer but it will tell you if you have had HSV I or II. Antibodies take time to develop after the first infection so, you may not have a positive test if you have just recently been exposed.
