Varies: If a hard stool is right at the anus, a hot bath and manually removing the stool with your finger after the water has softened it may be your best choice at this time. Occasionally inserting a glycerin suppository may help draw water down to the hard stool or even the use of a Fleet's enema. Hope this helps.... http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/tc/constipation-age-12-and-older-home-treatment

Hard stool: When hard stool is difficult to expel, you could try inserting a glycerin rectal suppository to lubricate the canal. If unsuccessful inserting an oil retention enema followed by a regular fleets enema should do it, but in very severe cases of fecal impaction manual disimpaction is required. To avoid all this try taking a stool softener like colace (docusate sodium) one to three times a day.

Additionally...: If hard stool is a pattern for you then I would consider a good daily regimen of stool softners, ducolax/colace and good fiber in your diet. You can also use metamucil or benefiber for daily fiber.
