UV and cataracts: Ultraviolet light is known to increase your risk of cataracts. If you do not wear UV blocking sunglasses, you are increasing your risk. If you move north, you might decrease your risk, but we would still recommend sunglasses to reduce UV exposure.

Not having them at : 61 is pretty good. I don't like sunglasses either. I had my 1st cataract removed last week, age 73, and the other will go in 2 weeks. We know that the amount of UV you receive is the cause of usual cataracts, so wearing them in a high UV environment will definitely extend the age at which they become bothersome for you, to the point of requiring removal if you wish to watch TV or read a book.
