A member asked:

What causes exotropia?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Many causes: Exotropia, in which the eyes deviate outwards from each other, is due to a defect in the fusion center in the brain. This allows for either one eye to be suppressed so you don't see double, or a condition called alternation in which each eye works while the other rests. Most cases are from childhood issues, and rarely from adult problems like certain traumas.
