A member asked:

I have a super sore throat. i had a white spot on the back of my throat where my tonsil used to be.( i got a tonsillectomy a few years back) now the area has swollen up into a painful lump. i have an earache as well.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Dr. can check throat: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is "super sore", recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Some throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can decrease throat pain.
