A member asked:

What treatment is used for a;ternate exotropia in a 5 year old where eyes turn up?

Depends on severity: treatment for alternating exotropia includes observation, patching, glasses, penalization with Atropine, exercises, and surgery--it all depends on how frequently the eyes turn, how well they alternate, if amblyopia is present. When the eyes drift up it is called hypertropia--sometimes it is secondary to the exotropia and will be improved by the chosen treatment. close follow up is important.
