Physical Therapist: The best exercises are usually those that strengthen your core. That being said, a well trained physical therapist should guide you through the proper exercises safely after spine surgery. Typically the goal is to balance asymmetry in the core muscles and reverse de-conditioning that has occurred since you have been healing from your surgery (thus being less active).

Core strengthening: Core exercises for your abdominal, oblique, and back muscles can help strengthen and support the soft tissue envelope around your spine. Although this doesn't necessarily change the condition of a pinched nerve, maintaining a neutral position can help minimize the risk of further injury to your nerve. Once the nerve pain resolves, yoga, pilates, and general conditioning/stretching can also help.
