Referred Pain: The nerves that go to your colon start in the low back. During constipation, there is extra strain on the colon. This irritation can travel along the nerves and effect the other nerves that go to the muscles and other tissues in the area. This is a viscero-somatic reflex. Another explanation is that simply having extra stool in the colon may cause an abnormal strain on the lumbo-sacral joints.
