Hormonal imbalance: If you're not sexually active, it's likely to be a hormonal problem. This will most likely regulate itself but if doesn't you need to be evaluated by a physician. You also should get a pregnancy test done if you are seually active

Late cycle: You probably didn't ovulate last month and that caused the lining to thicken more then usual leading to prolonged heavy bleeding. It happens to most women at least once or so, but it happening often you might need an evaluation. Also, check a pregnancy test if you are active.
