Sugar!: Excellent question! I don't know what medications you are taking, but if they are by mouth, it's because you need to be strictly fasting. However, if you have VERY HIGH blood sugars without insulin, this is concerning. A VERY HIGH blood sugar can affect the scan and cause a false negative(it's looks normal when it's not). If you have well controlled diabetes on pills, just skip that dose.

Listen more closely: The medication you shouldn't take before a PET is metformin (Glucophage). It has specific effects on the quality of images, and interpretation of the scan. It is very important that your blood sugar be well controlled at the time of the PET scan. So, saying you shouldn't take ANY of your diabetes medications is probably incorrect. High blood sugar at the time of PET interferes with the study.
