Hoarseness: Hoarseness that comes and goes typically would be something seen with vocal nodules, laryngeal reflux, acute or chronic laryngitis or trauma, among others. When a cancer occurs in the voice box, the most common voice change is slowly progressive hoarseness that does not really go away. The voice will usually continue to get worse and worse as a cancer invades deeper into the vocal cords
