L 5 pain: Yes, dorsal root irritation of L5 can cause this.

Radiating pain: Certainly the way we are wired, pain is often felt in the front of our bodies from a pain source in the spine. This is most common in the thoracic spine (rib bearing). Imagine that the nerves from your back follow along with the corresponding rib to the sternum. Nipple level t4, xiphoid t7-8, and umbilicus (belly button) t10, groin t12 above and L1 below. May not be looking at right level of spine.
