Sore throat: How long have you had the sore throat? Most sore throats, 80%, are viral in origin. It usually takes 7 to 10 days before it becomes bacterial. You should take throat lozenges, gargle salt water, drink lots of fluids, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for discomfort. If it gets progressively worse and there is a white discharge, you need to see MD for exam, culture, and possibly antibiotics.
