I cut my pinkie finger yesterday at the edge of my finger nail with a knife preparing ribs. i got it to stop bleeding and we put on a butterfly. not sure if i should have got stitches. ?

Depends: Depends on the size and depth of the wound. Usually a cut such as you describe is too small for stitches and does well with a tight bandage. Lubricate (vaseline, not bacitracin), rinse in water, and apply a fresh bandage at least once a day.
