A member asked:

Dental infections can be from aerobic or anaerobic bacteria. amoxicillin not solving gum infection. how does dentist test for type of bacteria?guesses

A doctor has provided 1 answer

C&S: Your dentist could obtain a specimen of the abscess and have a lab perform a C&S (culture and sensitivity test) to identify the bacteria and their sensitivity. The results could take several days, or he or she could go ahead and change your antibiotic from amoxicillin to another antibiotic which would provide more coverage for anaerobic organisms.
