Lots of things: Hard to know for sure just with "soreness" in eyeball. Have your eyes evaluated by an ophthalmologist. The only sure way is to examine you. Artificial tears may be tried and if effective, you probably have surface related irritation. Make an appointment.

How severe: Slight soreness may be muscle fatigue/strain, severe soreness may be something more serious an inflammatory eye disease that needs medical attention.
