Ear popping: occurs when there is a change in the air pressure on one side of ear drum. The ear drum (tympanic membrane) is a thin flexible membrane, and changes in pressure on either side can cause it to move abruptly causing the "pop" you experience. Swimmer's ear causes swelling in the ear canal which affects the air pressure on the outside of the ear drum.
