Doctor can check: Whenever there is a new sex partner, always check both people out for any common STD's (even without symptoms). If there are worrisome symptoms or if one or both people are "high risk", then both people can be evaluated further, for the less common types of STD's. If lucky, the discharge might turn out non-infectious... but "thick smelly" sounds like a trip to the doctor.

Bacterial vaginosis: ...is the main cause of strong vaginal odor, often with discharge. BV is overgrowth of mostly normal bacteria. Odor often is most prominent after sex. Trichomonas, an STD, also can do it. BV & trich are more common in people with other STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc), and new parter suggests STD risk. See a doctor soon; one of Australia's excellent sexual health centres would a very good choice.
