Could multiple sclerosis be considered to be a white matter disease due to atrophy of the brain, like other well known white matter diseases?

Not exactly as said: Multiple Sclerosis is considered to be a neurodegenerative disease of the white matter but it's not DUE TO atrophy rather it occurs as a result of an autoimmune attack by the body of the white matter tracts.
