Cancer and genetics: Greetings. Yes. Having immediate family members who have suffered cancer does place you at higher risk for developing any cancer. As far as oral, throat or any other cancer goes, risk factors include smoking, chewing, even second hand tobacco exposure, alcohol use, GERD, and multiple sexual partners. Head and neck cancers are now examined with genetic testing to recommend adequate treatment.
