Need diagnosis: Bronagh, sounds like you have soreness, not tenderness, and it is aggravated by certain muscles used when you are sitting up. Does it then go away? If so, you have strained those muscles and just need to learn to roll to one side and push yourself up until it clears up. If pain persists, or other joints are involved you should see your GP for possible arthritis. Meanwhile, sleep on a hot pad.

Tenderness is a word: we use to describe having pain when your back is examined. I believe you are having chronic back pain. You'd think if you knew exactly what the problem was it could be fixed...but often one can't precisely diagnose the cause. It requires a multifactorial approach. I refer you to "Taking Care of Your Back at Home" from the U.S. National Library of Medicine: nlm.nih.gov. The info there is excellent
