Heart beat: should be present on a fetal ultrasound by 7 weeks. If not present, either the dates are off, the quality of the exam is poor, or the fetus or baby is no longer alive, unfortunately, and your doctor may suggest a D & C or allow you to miscarry naturally. The loss a baby at any stage of pregnancy is a big loss, and hopefully one you will not have to suffer.

There should be a: heart beat visible on the ultrasound screen by 7 weeks. Depending upon how sensitive your Doppler is you should also hear the sound. But there is a variable timeline so if you do not hear or see the beat, dates may be off. It may be too early. So it is best to wait another 2 weeks to be sure. Recheck with ultrasound and then go from there. Talk to your doctor about what is ha happening.
