Need GI Follow Up: Darker the stool higher up the GI tract. Now you mention red brown than more red. Sounds like you could have hemorrhoids but the black tar could be an ulcer or gastritis etc etc. You may need egd and colonscopy esp if family history of colon cancer or peptic ulcer disease.
