Water sports common: Amebic meningoencephalitis is very rare. Only 300 cases reported worldwide in the last 50 years. Activities associated with infection include swimming, watercraft and diving. Risk of infection is about 2.6 per million exposures. You are more likely to be struck by lightening. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

N. fowleri: There have only been eight case-reports of Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri in South Carolina from 1962 to 2016. The chance of getting this infection is very, very low.
